Institutional Research

Lionsgate:
Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation or Lionsgate,is a North American entertainment company. The company was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 3, 1997, and is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. As of 2012, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America and the sixth most profitable movie studio.

Notable Productions:
Saw (series)
Hostel (series)
Rambo
3:10 to Yuma
Transporter 3
Kick-Ass
Alpha and Omega
Warrior
Silent Hill: Revelation
The Midnight Meat Train
The Devils Rejects
The Hunger Games
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  - Part 2

Summit Entertainment:
Summit Entertainment LLC are a subsidiary of Lionsgate Entertainment and was founded in 1991. In September 2008, merger talks between Summit and Lions Gate Entertainment were the subject of media speculation, but no deal was finalized at that time. On February 1, 2009, it was announced that Lionsgate would acquire Summit, along with its library of six films and rights to theTwilight franchise. On January 13, 2012, Lions Gate Entertainment acquired Summit for $412.5 million.

Lionsgate target a variety of audiences with their films, ranging from 18+ (i.e. Hostel) to Universal (i.e. Bratz the movie), this does help the institution reach multinational conglomerate status, therefore by widening their audiences they open up opportunity for generating larger revenues. Though Lionsgate do focus highly upon the horror genre and even have a separate intro on their film openings to distinguish between the genres of their film. With a red/black coloured variation of the original intro that featured a more positively connoting aesthetic. As Lionsgate is a major film company  it allows them to inject a larger amount of funding into the production of a movie as to achieve a larger output, for example Lionsgate placed an $83,000,000 budget 2012's production of The Hunger Games, which was much more than most of their other films, the film achieved massive success on a worldwide scale and grossed $686,533,290.

This institution could be interested in producing my film because they have a mass of experience when dealing with the genre. Also, the research I gathered helped my asses the criteria I needed to meet when producing my film to target as large of an audience as possibly- with Lionsgate being a conglomerate, they will only produce/ consider producing a film if they can make a profit on it (i.e. 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' made a loss of almost $8,000,000). To attract attention to this film company (or other similar institutions) I could enter my film into film festivals, such as the Sundance film festival, where in the modern day it is now ideological that for any director to be successful, they have to be successful at Sundance (films like 'The Woman' gained success at Sundance and was distributed worldwide by Salient Media). Other forms of promotion could include, the uploading of my film onto websites such as YouTube and the utilising of social networking (such as Facebook and Twitter) to begin to establish a fan base, in attempt to gain some noticeability.

Twisted Pictures:
Twisted Pictures is an American independent production company, mainly creating films of the horror genre. The company was founded in 2004 'byEvolution Entertainment's' Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Gregg Hoffman. The institution was formed after the box office success of Saw in 2004, which lead to a nine-picture distribution deal with Lionsgate .The company went on to produce six sequels in the Saw film series.
Notable Works:
Saw (series)
Dead Silence
Texas Chainsaw 3D
The Tortured

How will this research affect my ideas?

This research has given me a greater insight into the background information regarding the production of films, as the opening from 'Martyrs' featured a series of intros from specific film production companies, this research has influenced my to use these specific intros (Lionsgate- 'horror intro and twisted pictures) and for my film as they suit the purpose and genre of my film. If I had chosen to use the intros from 'Martyrs', they would not suit my target audience (which as it is not going to be produced on a worldwide scale) which would be primarily an English speaking audience- noting the fact that the intros from 'Martyrs' were all French production/distribution institutions. As twisted pictures have a production deal with Lionsgate (producer of 'Dawn of The Dead') I can assume that if my product was produced under Twisted Pictures then my product would be distributed by Lionsgate- therefore linking to my initial film opening research.
